This handmade copper coffee grinder looks like a work of art rather than an ordinary kitchen appliance. For the final touch, we strongly recommend that you invest in a traditional Turkish coffee serving set.
It provides excellent functionality, rapid performance, and high-quality metallic burrs that allow a perfect grind no matter what your coffee source.
Its compact design makes it one of the most portable Turkish coffee grinders, a sure way to attract attention when you take it with you on your next trip. You can also adjust it so that it can grind your coffee beans for a pour-over as well.
It’s too bad about the durability, and I can see how it might be susceptible to wear and tear. But for the price, it still offers decent value for the money.
Pros
- Metallic burrs are very consistent and are resistant to dulling
- Can easily be taken with you on trips
- A large number of adjustments to grind for any brewing method.

You may be wondering why I would [put an electric grinder on the list when I’ve already explained why you should use a manual Turkish coffee grinder.
The reason is that there are a lot of people that won’t use a manual grinder and will always take the convenience of an electric model over a manual one.
If you’re one of these people the Capresso is ideal since it has an extra-fine setting that will get your grind size pretty close to what you need to brew a traditional Turkish coffee.

This unit can hold just enough beans for a couple of rounds of french press or aero press, but it has to be ground with a bit of elbow grease. It does take more time to grind the beans than a burr grinder with a blade.
Getting the grind just right took some time as you have to remember click count. The more clicks, the coarser the grind.
For a fine grind of which you would need for Turkish coffee, use the setting between 1 and 3

What Is A Turkish Coffee Grinder
A Turkish coffee grinder is usually a manual grinder with the burrs machined tighter to produce a finer grind equivalent to flour.
This is very important due to the way you brew Turkish coffee and how you have to use a much finer grind than what your normal manual or electric grinders are able to produce.
How Fine Should The Grind Be
Turkish coffee requires an extremely fine grind, even finer than you would find in a cup of espresso.
This is because, unlike with other brewing techniques, coffee grinds will be consumed when you drink, so you want them to be as powder-like as possible.
Because you need what is considered an “extra fine” grind, most traditional grinders, both electric and manual, won’t measure up.
That’s why you’ll want to look for a Turkish coffee grinder that is specifically made to ensure you’re not drinking huge chunks of coffee with every sip.
What Beans Work Best
The type of grinder you have is more important than the beans you use, so pick up a bag of your favorite flavors or experiment with new types of beans until you find the one you like most.
Arabica and Robusta coffees are most commonly used. Roast does play a larger role in the preparation, and you’ll probably want to go with a medium roast for your next cup.
The darker the roast, the stronger your brew.
How Do You Use a Turkish Coffee Grinder
As the name might imply, a manual coffee grinder requires a hands-on approach.
Simply fill the cylinder of your coffee grinder with the beans of your choice and begin the process of hand-grinding it to a fine powder, akin to the texture of flour.
Check on your progress and continue grinding until the coffee is excellent.
Why Would You Want to Use a Turkish Coffee Grinder
The benefits of using a Turkish coffee grinder instead of the grinder you already have at home will determine if you succeed or fail at this unique brewing method.
Since you will ultimately drink coffee grounds by the time you finish your coffee, you want to ensure that they’re as fine as possible, which can really only be done with a Turkish coffee grinder.
If the grounds are too large, the drinking experience won’t be enjoyable, and you won’t have a genuine Turkish coffee; this is why you need the right tool for the job.
What to Ask Yourself Before Purchasing a Turkish Grinder
There are several different types of Turkish coffee grinders available today, and deciding on which one is best for you depends on a few key factors, like how often you’ll be using it and your budget.
Here are a few questions to keep in mind:
Does it Make a Fine Grind
Genuine Turkish coffee grinder should provide the extra-fine grind we’ve discussed so far, but most other coffee grinders will not.
When looking, make sure to avoid all-purpose grinders that will provide grinds fine enough for espresso but not Turkish coffee.
Don’t be fooled by the grind adjustments on other tools either; you’ll see that many of them have anywhere from 24 to 55 settings.
None of these will make your coffee beans into a fine enough grind for what you’re looking for.
How Big is it
Consider how many cups of coffee you’re regularly planning to make and how often you’re planning to make them.
Many Turkish coffee grinders are designed to make one cup at a time, but since the process requires some dedication and a little bit of strength, you’ll save yourself time if you make many cups at once.
You also have a few commercial electric grinder options if you’re looking to make larger batches, but these will cost a lot more.
Is it Durable
Turkish coffee grinders run the gamut of price, but when you consider a higher-quality and higher-priced model, chances are it will last you a long time, providing years of great coffee.
The more durable and reliable the brand is, the better it will produce fine, delicious coffee grinds.
They come in several different materials, but it’s important to buy one that can really keep up with the job.
How Expensive is it
Depending on how large your Turkish coffee grinder is and what materials it’s made of, it can really vary in price.
You also have options when it comes to your new grinder’s design, and you can find it in both traditional Turkish patterns or more contemporary styles.
These factors and how often you use it, and how much coffee you make regularly can contribute to their cost.
You can find inexpensive Turkish coffee grinders, but higher-quality devices are often more reliable and longer-lasting.
Should I Get Manual or Electric
You do have a few options when it comes to electric Turkish coffee grinders, but you’re going to get a much more genuine experience when you use a manual grinder.
It’s easier to get that excellent grind with a manual grinder that makes Turkish coffee so delicious.
That said, if you’re producing large amounts of coffee or if you don’t have the time to hand grind your coffee beans, you do have a couple of electric coffee grinder options that might come close.
What Is Turkish Coffee
We’ve already discussed the importance of a fine Turkish grind.
As the name would imply, it’s a traditional drink found in Turkey and other parts of the world like Greece, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.
It is steeped similarly to how tea is steeped; only the water is brought to a near boil with the coffee grounds and sugar already in the mixture.
You can also add certain spices like cardamom for a more unique and warming flavor.
The difference between drip coffee and Turkish coffee is that you will drink the grounds in a Turkish coffee, which is why they must be very fine.
How Do I Prepare a Turkish Coffee
Preparing a Turkish coffee isn’t as complicated as it seems, and the final product is a strong and delicious drink with a bold taste.
Here’s what you need to know about this unique brewing method.
Here are the materials and Ingredients you’ll need
- In addition to your coffee, you’re going to need cold water—filtered is best—granulated sugar, Turkish coffee cups, and a cezve.
- A cezve is a special pot for brewing your Turkish coffee. It has a wide bottom and is traditionally made of copper or brass, but you can find a more modern design to fit your kitchen’s style if you prefer.
- If you want to add spices, like cinnamon or cardamom, have them near, as well. Of course, you’ll need your Turkish coffee grinder, too.
- Grind Your Coffee; bring your preferred beans to a fine powder.
- Mix Coffee, Water, and Sugar in Your Cezve
Turkish coffee differs from your classic cup of Joe in a few key ways.
To start, you’ll add your sugar at the beginning of the process, not at the end. If one of your guests requests an unsweetened cup of coffee, then brew their cup first and add the sugar to make the remaining coffee.
Turkish coffee is also unique in that you will use much more coffee to water, at a ratio of about 1:8, whereas regular drip coffee is around half of that.
You can measure it formally or use about 1-2 large teaspoons of coffee for every 3oz cup of water.
It’s also worth noting that it is never made with dairy products, so you won’t need milk or creamer.
Stir these ingredients until just combined, taking care not to over stir and risk clumping.
Bring to Heat
Many recipes will call for a boil, but you’ll actually want to bring the coffee
to a much lower heat than a true boil, which will only take about 3-4 minutes.
Keep it at a medium-high heat temperature until the coffee begins to sink and you notice the sugar dissolving. Reduce the heat and stir carefully and slowly but regularly until foam begins to form.
Ladle the Foam
Remove your coffee from the heat and carefully spoon some of the foam into however many coffee cups you are making.
Return it to the heat
Heat the coffee for another few seconds and then pour over the foam,
Taking care not to allow it to boil. Then pour the coffee over your foam and serve.
You’ll want to serve it with a glass of water as a palate cleanser and a small chocolate or another sweet on the side.
What Makes Turkish Coffee Special
In addition to an exciting and storied history that dates back to the Ottoman Empire and reaches around the world, it is special for its unique brewing method and for the bold and delicious flavors that come along with each sip.
Because the grinds are so fine, the coffee is richer and more flavorful than other coffee drinks, and adding the sugar in during the brewing process combines the sweetness with the coffee taste more completely.
There are many theories that added caffeine and spices have health and energy benefits, as well.
How Strong is Turkish Coffee
The amount of caffeine in it varies depending on the type of beans you use and how you brew it at home.
While there is less caffeine in Turkish coffee than an espresso shot, it still has more caffeine than your regular bottle of caffeinated soda.
However, it truly stands out when it comes to rich and bold flavors, thanks to its unique brewing process and fine grounds.
Should I Drink the Coffee Sludge
While it may feel a little strange to leave so much in the cup, you don’t want to drink the sludge at the bottom after you’ve finished the liquid.
Much of the grounds are already consumed in the coffee itself, so don’t worry that you’re not getting that caffeine boost!
Is Turkish Coffee From Turkey
Turkish coffee was introduced to Turkey in 1540 by the Turkish Governor of Yemen, he discovered people i his region brewing this particular caffeinated beverage and instantly became enamored with it.
He then brought it to the attention of Sultan Suleiman the magnificent (yes, that was his title), who started to have his staff prepare the coffee by grinding the coffee beans with mortars to make it finer to be able to use an Ibrik.
Why Does It Taste Different
Turkish coffee will taste different than your classic morning cup for a few of the reasons mentioned above.
By using the grounds directly in the coffee itself, rather than brewing them through a drip system, the flavors will be richer and bolder, which is why you only need a small amount for the full flavor experience.
When you add sugar and spices during the brewing process, they’re more fully incorporated, as well, for a stronger taste.
Is Turkish Coffee Bad For Me
Like with any coffee drink, moderation is key to enjoying it. But as long as you’re not drinking it two or three times a day, you’ll be just fine.
It does have a moderate amount of caffeine and is normally made with sugar, so take the same precautions you would with every caffeine or sugar recipe in your diet, but otherwise, you don’t have anything to worry about.
Which is Better, a Manual or Electric Turkish Coffee Grinder
While we’ve been touting the benefits of purchasing a manual grinder, you do have a few options for an electric Turkish coffee grinder.
They’re mostly designed for industrial or large-scale Turkish coffee production, like the kind you’d need for a restaurant, so if you’re looking to produce just a few cups at home, a manual coffee grinder is your best bet.
A manual coffee grinder will always get the finer powder, which is better for your next cup when given the option.
Is There a Difference Between Roasting Coffee Beans for Espresso and Turkish Coffee
Not a very big one. Most of the uniqueness of the Turkish coffee roasting experience comes from the process of heating the water, sugar, and finely ground coffee together.
The type of roast you use is really dependent on what kind of flavors you’re looking for and how strong you want your coffee to be.
Espresso is traditionally made with a dark roast, and while Turkish coffee is often as well, there’s more room for experimenting to match your tastes.
Is It Possible to Make a Turkish Coffee With An Espresso Machine
It’s not a good idea.
The true uniqueness of the Turkish coffee drinking experience is found in the process of brewing it in a cezve.
An espresso machine brews coffee by pushing pressurized water through the coffee puck to extract your espresso.
This will end up being a completely different drink, not resembling what you’re looking for at all.
You will also run the risk of clogging or breaking your espresso machine with a grind size that is so fine.
Brewing techniques are essential for individual coffee types, and you shouldn’t try to interchange them for convenience.
Turkish coffee is one of the oldest and most lasting methods for brewing and enjoying a cup of coffee. It’s bold, delicious, and rich in flavor and history.
When you find the right materials and tools for that perfect grind, you’ll be able to enjoy a great coffee-drinking experience—and share it with friends and family.
Conclusion
There some things in life that you can get away with not having the proper tools.
Turkish coffee is not one of those things.
If you’re going to take the time to prepare a traditional Turkish coffee, you will need a Turkish coffee grinder.
It will make the experience better, and you won’t find yourself drinking coffee grinds, which I have never found myself missing.
