Students are known for their big love for coffee. They drink it in the morning, before classes, during lectures, and when dealing with homework. Oh, and let’s not even start with the coffee consumption peaks during exam sessions. It’s almost like students believe in some magical qualities of coffee. However, maybe they are up to something. Maybe, coffee does help young people to study better. So let’s look into it. Here is why coffee (in moderation) can be a good choice for studying. 

It improves mental focus 

With most energy drinks, you receive high sugar and caffeine doses. The sugar creates excessive energy buzz, anxiety, nervousness, and agitation. All these things don’t help you focus or study better. It’s quite the opposite, actually. You wanted an energy drink to help you study. Instead, you can barely sit at all. 

Your blood is pumping. Your thoughts are all over the place. You can’t sit still, and you surely can’t focus on what’s in front of you. In such a condition, you can barely read a review, not to mention complete homework yourself. 

Well, the bad news, things will only get worse after the sugar rush ends. You will drop lower than before drinking the thing, feeling apathetic, empty, and tired. This is because your body has just spent lots of energy on all that buzz. Now, you either need another drink or rest.

It can boost your mood on a chemical level, tricking your brain into feeling happier than it does. 

So how can your mood help you study better? Well, it helps in any possible way! First of all, you are more inclined to approach harder tasks as your confidence rises along with your mood. Secondly, approaching homework in a good mood gives you a higher chance of actually finishing those tasks. Lastly, being in the mood helps you focus better and find the bright side in what you are doing. Hence, it can improve your motivation. 

In addition, frequent coffee drinkers have lower chances of getting depressed, which is surely a nice bonus. Unfortunately, young people are most prone to developing various mental health illnesses, including anxiety and depression. So, even small steps matter in fighting those odds.

Most habitual coffee drinkers know perfectly well that coffee is more than just a beverage. It’s a ritual. Of course, it’s especially true for those students who make their coffee themselves. Still, there is a lot about coffee that comes with certain practices. For instance, most people will have their coffee first thing in the morning. Their morning routine is incomplete without that cup, and they may feel like they have started on the wrong foot. 

The same ritual can be around your study routine. For example, the smell of fresh coffee can help you concentrate and get into a productive mood. Thus, the coffee here is a part of the general ritual. It is a key part, really. Once a student has their coffee, it’s time to work. So, having all the pieces of the common routine together helps you focus on studying.

The best ways to brew coffee at home 

You can’t go to a coffee shop anytime you study and feel like having a coffee, right? It’s not that money-wise or convenient. It will take time away from your studies. So, instead, you should really try brewing coffee at home. Here are a few easy and affordable methods to do so. 


It’s a simple pour-over method that requires a special glass flask and paper filters. The brewing time takes about 4 minutes. However, you will need another minute or two to slowly pour hot water over the ground beans. Cleaning a Chemex also requires a special brush. 

French Press

One of the easiest brewing methods requires little of your time or attention. Just put the ground beans into the press, pour boiled water, lift the top part and let it stay for about four minutes. The beans extract all their flavors during this time, creating a rich, luxurious taste. 

Moka Pot

Espresso fans can enjoy a nice cup of coffee made on their stove, Moka Pots. Here, you put the hot water in the lower chamber, ground beans in the middle in a special filter (filling it fully), then put the pot on the stove and wait. However, don’t go too far, as your Moka Pot needs your attention. As soon as it starts making squirting noises, take it off the stove and serve.

All young coffee lovers can breathe out with relief. You can continue with your coffee habits. Just keep them within reasonable limits. More than two cups of coffee per day can already exceed the norm, cause addiction, and downgrade coffee’s effects on your mind and body. So, you want to treat coffee as a secret weapon you use only on special occasions. Not every study session should go with coffee. However, you will immediately know when it’s missing from your study routine.
